About

Richard Finkelstein has followed several career paths. He was a public defender in New York, an assistant clinical professor of law and director of the NYU Criminal Law Clinic, and co-founder and director of the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, a public interest law office. Having originally come to New York from Philadelphia with the intention of becoming a painter, he decided to move on from law and go back to the studio full time. He began showing large charcoal drawings and paintings at the DFN Gallery in New York and later began to make animations, and build sets and dioramas, which he turned into large format narrative photographs. One of his projects was the current series Sitting in the Dark With Strangers. He is currently represented by the Robert Mann Gallery in New York.
